PM: Armenia will hold snap parliamentary elections in December 2018
Early parliamentary elections will be held in Armenia in December 2018, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today.
“We must record that in the wake of the recent developments, Armenia will hold snap parliamentary elections in December 2018,” he told reporters at the National Assembly, referring to a bill seeking amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly drafted by the parliamentary forces.
According to him, the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and other political forces again fail to adequately assess the current domestic political situation in Armenia.
“If there was a question before whether or not a counter-revolution exists in Armenia, I register officially that yes, there is counter-revolution in Armenia, and the counter-revolution comprises all the individuals and political forces who supported and are going to support the bill,” Pashinyan said.
“They are assuring me that it is a bill initiated by three political forces. Each MP who will state that s/he backs that bill is a representative of counter-revolution and wants the corruption system to take revenge over the authorities. Naturally, we will not allow it,” he stressed.
According to Pashinyan, a direct democratic government has now been established in Armenia, and if it turns out he is not people’s representatives in the PM’s status, no elections will take place, but if it turns out he is people’s representatives the elections will be conducted.
The PM added that he had met with Speaker of the National Assembly Ara Babloyan earlier on Tuesday to brief him on his stance on holding the elections.
