France’s Macron pays tribute to Armenian Genocide victims in Yerevan
French President Emmanuel Macron visited on Thursday morning the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial in Yerevan to pay homage to the Armenian Genocide victims.
Macron, who arrived in Armenia with his spouse Brigitte Macron on an official visit on Wednesday, is set to meet with President Armen Sarkissian and take part in the XVII Summit of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) opening today in Yerevan.
He is also expected to attend a gala concert in Yerevan’s Republic Square organized as part of the Francophonie summit.
The French leader was accompanied by Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan, and Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan.
In 1998, the French National Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing the 1915 Armenian Genocide. France became the first European country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in 2001.
