NSS chief: New criminal case opened against ex-Yerevan mayor over illegal property allegations
A new criminal case has been launched against Former Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan over recently released footage on his property, Director of the National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan told reporters after today’s Cabinet meeting.
“The investigation is underway regarding his property. If proved that it has been obtained illegally, believe me, he will be brought to justice,” he said.
Margaryan, 40, is already facing charges over the fraud case in Yerevan Foundation. While being questioned over the case, he admitted wrongdoing in the foundation, the security chief reminded, meantime adding Margaryan will be freed from obligations after returning all the misused funds back to the state budget.
“The director of Yerevan Foundation has undertaken commitment to restore 1 billion 810 million drams to the state budget, of which, if I am not mistaken, 1 billion drams have already been returned to the budget, while the remaining 810 million will be paid in the next few days,” he told reporters.
Taron Margaryan stepped down as Yerevan mayor on 9 July amid strong public pressure.
