‘He was a great storyteller with a poetic eye’ – famous American photographer about Ara Guler
World-famous American photographer Steve McCurry took to Instagram to pay tribute to legendary Turkish-Armenian photographer Ara Guler who died on Wednesday in Turkey aged 90.
He also shared a photo of Guler made by himself in Istanbul.
“We have lost one of the world's great photographers today. Ara Guler died today at 90 in Istanbul, Turkey. A good friend, always generous and quick to help, he was a great storyteller with a poetic eye. We always got together when I was in Istanbul. I made this portrait of him after dinner one night for my last roll of Kodachrome project in 2010,” the photographer wrote.
Guler, nicknamed the “Eye of Istanbul,” passed away late Wednesday at the intensive care unit of the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul after attempts to revive him failed. For years he had suffered from kidney failure and underwent dialysis three times a week, Asbarez said.
