Tsarukyan, Yelk factions initiate fresh round of debates on electoral reforms
The Yelk and Tsarukyan Alliance factions of the Armenian parliament are launching a petition to hold new round of discussions and voting on the Electoral Code bill in an extraordinary session on Monday, October 29, Tsarukyan faction MP Naira Zohrabyan said at today’s regular session.
Addressing her colleagues from the Republican Party of Armenia faction, the lawmaker said: “You took the floor yesterday to state that the new Electoral Code prescribes much fairer and more competent electoral procedures, so I urge you not to boycott or lead to any provocations, but to be present and take part in the voting.”
The National Assembly voted down in the first reading the government-proposed amendments to the Electoral Code at Monday’s emergency session.
The draft law received 56 votes in favour and 3 against. 63 votes were required for the bill to be passed as envisaged by the Constitution of Armenia.
Most of Republican lawmakers did not attend the voting in an apparent boycott.
