Petition on redebating electoral reforms gets required number of signatures
The petition on holding fresh round of discussions and voting on the amendments to Armenia’s Electoral Code in an extraordinary session on Monday has collected the required amount of signatures, Tsarukyan faction MP Naira Zohrabyan told reporters on Tuesday.
29 out of the needed 27 lawmakers have signed the petition launched by Yelk and Tsarukyan Alliance factions of the parliament, she said.
“ARF is the only faction that has not signed. But they have said they will vote in favor,” she added.
According to her, the faction didn’t sign the petition because their three key recommendations failed to be included in the Electoral Code bill.
The National Assembly voted down in the first reading the government-proposed amendments to the Electoral Code at Monday’s emergency session.
The draft law received 56 votes in favour and 3 against. 63 votes were required for the bill to be passed as envisaged by the Constitution of Armenia.
Most of the Republican lawmakers did not attend the voting in an apparent boycott.
