Young Armenian weightlifters continue to shine at European C’ships
Armenian weightlifters continue showing strong performances at the 2018 European Junior & U23 Weightlifting Championships taking place in Zamosc, Poland.
Andranik Karapetyan (85kg) from Etchmiadzin lifted 176kg at the snatch and 193kg at the clean and jerk events to be crowned the European champion at the U23 tournament with a total result of 369kg.
He also grabbed gold in both events separately, setting a new European record in the snatch event.
Another Armenian weightlifter Hakob Mkrtchyan (94kg) from the second largest city of Gyumri has become a European champion as well after lifting a combined weight of 368kg.
Athlete Samvel Babakyan (94kg) again from Gyumri won a silver medal at the junior championship with a combined total of 361kg – bringing the third silver to the Armenian team.
Karen Avagyan (94kg) won a bronze medal in the snatch event of the junior championship, taking the fourth place with 358kg.
Diana Aghabekyan (90kg) and Arpine Dalalyan (+90kg) are set to start competing at the women’s junior championship, while Arsen Martirosyan (105kg) and Varazdat Lalayan (+105 kg) will start their performances in the men’s championship on Friday.
