Parliament again fails to adopt Electoral Code bill
The Armenian National Assembly failed once again to adopt amendments to the Electoral Code during today’s special session.
The government-drafted bill received 62 votes for and 2 against. It required minimum 63 votes in favor to be adopted as envisaged by the Constitution of Armenia.
Earlier on 22 October, the bill failed to be passed when Republican MPs boycotted the session.
The new electoral reforms propose to hold elections with party list system of proportional representation instead of the current rating list system. It would lower the minimum threshold of making it to the parliament to 4 percent instead of the current 5 for parties and 6 percent instead of the current 7 for alliances.
The bill also proposes to decrease the amount of electoral deposits and increase women’s representation in the parliament to 30 percent.
