Official: Arms smuggling from US to Armenia thwarted in July
Agents of the Anti-Smuggling Department of the State Revenue Committee thwarted a major weapons smuggling attempt from the Unites States into Armenia in July this year, Vardan Vardanyan, the head of the department, told a news conference on Wednesday.
Summing up his department’s activities over the past ten months, he said the arms smuggling has been attempted via post.
“One Sig Sauer pistol, one Rochester rifle and one Witness pistol were discovered in a postal delivery from the US. It means weaponry was delivered to Armenia from the US via post. We did not have such a precedent before,” he said.
Vardanyan added a criminal case has been opened after revealing the arms smuggling case.
He said the weapons were packaged in a way that the scan equipment did not show what was inside. It raised some suspicion of the staff, thus the agents opened the package to discover the weapons.
