Armenia’s Khachaturov likely to be replaced by Belarus rep. as CSTO chief
The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will discuss, among other things, the appointment of a new secretary general at the Astana summit scheduled for November 8, Regnum reports, citing Acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s spokesman Arman Yegoyan.
The news agency cited an article by Kommersant newspaper suggesting a representative of Belarus is most likely to assume the office of the CSTO chief for a term of three years.
Khachaturov was recalled from the post of CSTO Secretary General on 2 November after being charged with overthrowing Armenia’s constitutional order during the March 1-2, 2008 post-election crackdown in Yerevan.
Citing its diplomatic sources, Kommersant says that Stanislav Zas from Belarus is most likely to be appointed as the new CSTO Secretary General at the Astana summit.
According to the reports, Armenia hoped to replace Khachaturov with another representative of the country in the post.
The CSTO is a Russia-led regional security grouping including Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
