Armenia sets up commission for funeral of weightlifting legend Yuri Vardanyan
Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has signed a decision to set up a government commission that will organize the funeral of world-famous Armenian weightlifter Yuri Vardanyan, who passed away last week.
Caretaker First Deputy PM Ararat Mirzoyan will head the commission, which includes caretaker ministers and deputy ministers, an advisor to the president, the Yerevan mayor and chief of police, Armenian church representatives and others.
The Armenian weightlifting legend passed away on 2 November in the United States after long serious illness at the age of 62. Vardanyan was a seven-time world champion, five-time European champion and 1980 Olympic champion, who set 43 world records.
