ZIL trucks set to tackle garbage collection issue in Armenian capital
In recent days, there are talks on social media suggesting that Sanitek Armenia, a branch of Sanitek International Group, providing waste collection in Yerevan, Armena, does not provide garbage disposal services any longer.
The claims are based on the fact that Soviet-era ZIL trucks are now carrying out garbage removal in the capital instead of Sanitek vehicles.
Speaking to Panorama.am, Yerevan Municipality spokesperson Hakob Karapetyan, however, dismissed the reports, stressing the company continues to perform its duties under a deal reached with the city hall.
“The reports alleging that the company has stopped working are simply disinformation. Sanitek just tries to handle the garbage collection crisis in the capital with support of other companies and subcontractors through their equipment in a prior agreement reached with the Yerevan Municipality,” he said.
Karapetyan stressed the company is renting vehicles and reaching agreements with other companies as an intermediate solution to the complicated issue before the conditions of its further activities are set.
“Garbage collection is a key priority for Yerevan Municipality and Mayor Hayk Marutyan, in person,” the official said.
He stressed previously as well garbage disposal by ZIL trucks was a common practice in Armenia, adding such trucks are used more often now.
“If we pay attention, we can fix a certain progress in the garbage collection issue compared to the past weeks,” Karapetyan said.
Commenting on the possibility of terminating the contract with Sanitek Armenia in the near future, the spokesperson said he cannot make any statement on the issue at the moment but did not rule out any possible changes in the company’s future activities.
Panorama.am could not reach Sanitek Armenia for more comments.
The Yerevan Municipality twice fined Sanitek for failing to conduct proper garbage disposal in Yerevan in July and August.
