Expert: Old Electoral Code points to ‘inadequacy’ of Armenian political field
The old Electoral Code shows the ‘inadequacy’ of the Armenian political filed, since all political forces should be ready to participate in elections at any moment, political technologist Armen Badalyan told a news conference on Friday.
According to him, the political forces should have realized that people’s mindset has drastically changed after the May developments in Armenia, but they failed to property react to the situation, stressing the political forces should have started indirectly campaigning long ago.
“Everyone is waiting for the formal launch of election campaign, while 12 days is a very short period. No discussions are being held; they are waiting to discuss all the accumulated problems within 12 days,” he stressed.
“Many have no idea what elections are about. For example, how do they imagine to be able to campaign in Syunik – from Meghri to Sisian – in one day? At the moment, we don’t even know who will actually run in the snap elections, only My Step bloc, Prosperous Armenia, Bright Armenia and Republic Parties have confirmed their participation, but we don’t know yet whether the Republican Party or the Armenian Revolutionary Federation will or won’t take part in the elections,” he added.
Commenting on the decision of Bright Armenia and Republic Parties to run for parliament separately, the expert stressed Republic’s ambitions may be a hinderance in registering serious success in the upcoming elections.
Asked how can the haste influence the election lists of political forces, Badalyan said that only competent and competitive forces should make it to the parliament, while a hasty conduct may prevent the forces from including proper candidates in their lists.
Early parliamentary elections will be held in Armenia on 9 December, with the election campaign set to launch on 26 November.
