Report: US-led airstrikes kill 40 in IS-held area of Syria
A Syria war monitor and state media are reporting that at least 40 people, mostly civilians, have been killed by US-led airstrikes on the last pocket held by Islamic State militants in eastern Syria, AP reports.
Rami Abdurrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, says airstrikes hit homes early Saturday in a village near the town of Hajin, near the border with Iraq. He says at least 43 people, including 17 children and 12 women, were killed. He says it is not clear if the men killed in the strikes were militants.
Syrian state news agency SANA also reported the strikes, saying 40 were killed in the remote area.
The coalition, which says it makes every effort to avoid targeting civilians, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
