Lavrov: Russia expects renewed Karabakh talks after formation of Armenian government
Russia expects renewed negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict after the formation of the new government in Armenia based on the results of the December 9 snap parliamentary elections, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters in Baku.
Summing up his Thursday’s talks with the Azerbaijani president, Lavrov said Ilham Aliyev demonstrated commitment to resume the peace talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
“I had a long and detailed conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev yesterday. We saw his sincere disposition to resume the talks and find a constructive solution,” Lavrov said.
“Russia is a close ally of both Armenia and Azerbaijan, meantime serving as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group along with the US and France.
“The recent meetings between the Azerbaijani president and Armenian prime minister in St. Petersburg and the two countries’ foreign ministers in Milan were not continuous, since they took place on the eve of Armenia’s parliamentary elections.
“Now when it's over, the Armenian government is to be formed. After that, the Armenian side will be ready to resume the negotiation process together with its Azerbaijani counterparts and co-chairs,” he added.
Lavrov also promised Russia will do its best to create favorable conditions for reaching a compromise and will strive to find creative ideas to that end.
