Armenia ranks 98th in Global Gender Gap Report
Armenia has ranked 98th in the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual report measuring the gender-based disparities worldwide, losing one notch from last year.
The Global Gender Gap Report 2018 benchmarks 149 countries on their progress towards gender parity across four thematic dimensions: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. In addition, this year’s edition studies skills gender gaps related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
According to the report, today, the relative gaps between women and men across the four key areas stands at 68%. This means that, on average, there is still a 32% gap to close.
Iceland remains the world’s most gender-equal country with 85 percent, followed by Norway, Sweden and Finland. Other countries that made it to the top 10 are Rwanda, New Zealand, Ireland and Namibia.
The findings of the WEF report show a progress in the sex ratio at birth. In 113 countries, the birth rate of girls stands at 94.4 percent, while it is over 92 percent in the other countries assessed.
Armenia, however, along with Azerbaijan, India and China, still records the lowest female-to-male sex ratio at birth, which is below 91 percent.
In terms of the economic opportunity, Armenia comes the 72nd. The country ranks the 35th in the educational attainment area and the 115th in terms of gender equality in politics.
