Republican politician ‘concerned’ by Azerbaijani leaders’ recent statements on Artsakh, Nakhichevan
Vice President of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Eduard Sharmazanov has voiced strong concerns over the recent statements of the Azerbaijani leadership on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and Nakhichevan, condemning the current Armenian authorities for silence.
“For two days we were receiving statements from our neighbour Azerbaijan, which raise concerns. It becomes twice as troublesome when Armenia’s government, the prime minister, who loves to go live on Facebook, have been keeping silent for two days,” the Republican politician said in a live video on Facebook.
He recalled the December 17 statement of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev saying the country’s ‘strong military potential is the key factor for resolving the Karabakh conflict’.
“In the same speech he says that as a result of some operation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the Nakhichevan section, 11,000 hectares of land have completely passed under their control. Moreover, he goes on stating that Azerbaijan has taken over strategic heights. He has been speaking for two days, but the Armenian authorities have not yet reacted to it. Isn’t that a reason to worry?” he said.
Sharmazanov next pointed to Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s claims alleging Yerevan and Baku have reached a common ground over Artsakh.
“Everything becomes twice troubling when shortly after the meeting in Milan, Mammadyarov announced that Armenia and Azerbaijan have finally reached a mutual understanding,” he said, expecting a strong response by the Armenian authorities.
