Mikayel Harutyunyan holds Russian citizenship – SIS
Former Armenian Defense Minister Mikayel Harutyunyan, who is wanted as part of a criminal case launched into the tragic events of March 1-2, 2008, holds Russian citizenship. As spokeswoman at Armenia’s Special Investigation Service (SIS) Marina Ohanjanyan told Panorama.am, the SIS has received the respective official response from Russian authorities. In her words, the CIS has sent another enquiry requesting information when Harutyunyan obtained Russian citizenship.
To remind, earlier Armenia issued interstate arrest warrant for Harutyunyan, currently residing in Russia. Russia dropped the CIS interstate arrest warrant in the Russian territory as under the Russian Constitution, the country’s citizens are not extradited to foreign states, including for criminal prosecution.
Harutyunyan has been charged with ‘overthrowing the constitutional order’ during the March 2008 post-election crackdown in the capital, which left eight civilians and two police officers dead.
