Armenia’s new parliament holds first session
The Seventh Convocation National Assembly of Armenia opened its inaugural session on Monday, January 14.
Under the National Assembly’s Rules of Procedure, the most elderly MP, Knyaz Hasanov representing the Kurdish community is to conduct the first session until the new speaker is elected.
President Armen Sarkissian and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II are present at the session.
The newly elected lawmakers are set to elect a new speaker, three deputy speakers and heads of standing committed that will be created, as well as to form a counting committee.
Also, the parliament will discuss the issue of approving the government program.
Congratulating the MPs-elect, Catholicos Karekin II wished them fruitful work, highlighting their future legislative efforts towards the creation of necessary opportunities for the continuous development of Armenia’s economy, progress in science, education and culture.
The new parliament is comprised of 132 lawmakers. The My Step bloc led by Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has received 88 mandates.
Prosperous Armenia Party and Bright Armenia have 26 and 18 seats, respectively. Under the Electoral Code, the two parties have been granted additional mandates to ensure a one-third presence in the National Assembly.
