Speaker of new Armenian parliament named
Armenia’s former First Deputy Prime Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has been elected Speaker of the new National Assembly as a result of a secret vote.
Nominated by the My Step bloc, his candidacy was backed by 131 lawmakers, Counting Committee Chairman Vahagn Hovakimyan said. One ballot was declared invalid.
The most elderly lawmaker, Knyaz Hasanov who chaired the inaugural parliament session, congratulated Mirzoyan on his election to the post.
The new speaker for his part expressed gratitude to the lawmakers for entrusting him with such a responsibility.
Mirzoyan served as an MP from the Yelk faction in 2017, assuming the office of the First Deputy Prime Minister in May last year.
