Armenia’s customs officers thwart drug smuggling attempt by Iranian citizens
Armenia’s State Revenue Committee (CEC) has foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs into Canada by Iranian citizens.
Customs officers of the committee searched two parcels loaded with clothing with a total weight of 25 kg at the cargo complex of the Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport on 10 January to discover narcotics hidden inside the clothing.
The parcel was being transferred on behalf of an Iranian citizen from Armenia to Canada. The officers said the inner materials of the clothing were soaked in opium.
Due to the large-scale intelligence measures, the CEC officers detained the Iranian smuggler on the next day while attempting to cross the border in the Agarak checkpoint. Another Iranian citizen involved in the drug smuggling attempt was arrested near Zvartnots Airport.
A criminal case has been launched into the incident. Both Iranian citizens has been placed under arrest as a probe is ongoing.
