Expert calls for ‘clear’ reactions to Armenophobia in Azerbaijan
The Sumgait pogroms of Armenians perpetrated by Azerbaijan failed to receive clear reactions, which resulted in the massacres of Armenians in Kirovabad (present-day Ganja), as well as the repressions against Armenians in Baku in 1989, expert on Azerbaijan Taron Hovhannisyan told a news conference on Friday.
The expert warned that if the international structures fail again to react clearly to the Armenophobia in Azerbaijan and call the things as they are presently, it may lead to ‘other developments.’
“The Armenophobia keeps raging in Azerbaijan in the recent years as well, as evidenced by the recent incident when Russian and Estonian citizens with Armenian descent were denied entry to Azerbaijan,” he stressed.
An expert on Azerbaijan, MP Tatevik Hovhannisyan noted the Armenian pogroms by Azerbaijan are voiced in the Council of Europe on numerous occasions, with a reference made to the resolution adopted by the organization 30 years ago.
“Thus, we address that issue through different measures and in various formats, with intensive lobbying activities underway,” she said.
Commenting on the state structures’ activities to push ahead with the issue, Taron Hovhannisyan stressed the former Information and Public Relations Center SNCO of the Armenian president’s office, which now operates under the PM’s office, has dealt with the issue for years.
“There are numerous works, websites, movies, books and studies that present what has happened. For example, a book based on the accounts of eyewitnesses currently living in the U.S. was published in 2016-2017. Work has been done and should be continued,” he added.
