Powerful quake strikes Azerbaijan; jolts felt in Artsakh
The Seismic Protection Service of Armenia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations detected a magnitude 4.9 earthquake in the territory of Azerbaijan at 11:31pm local time (GMT 7:31pm) on Tuesday.
The earthquake struck 2km northwest off the city of Shamakhi in Azerbaijan’s Ismayilli region. at a depth of 10km.
The tremor measured magnitude 6-7 points at the epicentre.
Jolts were also felt in Artsakh with magnitude 3 in the towns of Stepanakert, Shushi and Hadrut.
After the earthquake, a total of 30 people sought medical help at the Shamakhi central hospital, Azerbaijan’s Healthcare Ministry told Trend news agency.
“The hospital worked in an emergency mode, six ambulance crews were on duty,” the ministry said. “Thirty people appealed to the hospital, three of them were taken to the department of traumatology. One person was diagnosed with dislocation of the arm and the other two were diagnosed with leg injuries. The injured were provided with necessary assistance.”
“Besides, one person suffered a cerebral hemorrhage,” the ministry noted. “That person is 58 years old and was placed in the intensive care unit. The patient’s condition is assessed as serious.”
