Defense minister: Armenia’s humanitarian mission in Syria ‘in line with the letter of the law’
Armenia’s humanitarian mission in Syria is in accordance with the letter of the law, Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan said today at a joint press conference with his Cypriot counterpart Savvas Angelides in Yerevan, commenting on the recent dispatch of an Armenian group of specialists to Aleppo.
“The official statement on our cooperation with Syria says there has been a written request by the Syrian authorities,” he said.
Tonoyan said that the possible move to send troops to Syria will also be in line with the letter of law. “Meantime, we will try to collaborate also with extra-parliamentary forces while taking a decision on the matter,” he added.
As reported earlier, Armenia dispatched an 83-member team of doctors, sappers, as well as personnel ensuring their safety to Syria to carry out humanitarian mine clearance activities, raise mine awareness among the population and offer medical aid in Aleppo exclusively outside the zone of military operations.
The Armenian government made the decision to provide humanitarian aid to Syria taking into consideration the war-triggered humanitarian crisis in the country and especially in Aleppo, the UN Security Council Resolutions 2393 (2017) and 2401 (2018), a written request from the Syrian side, as well as the existence of a large Armenian community in Aleppo.
