Armenia has no plans to take part in military actions in Syria, Pashinyan clarifies
Armenia is not planning to engage in any military operations in Syria, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at today’s parliamentary debates on the government’s action plan.
His comments came after Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan announced on Tuesday that Armenia’s humanitarian mission in Syria is in accordance with the letter of the law, adding that should there arise a necessity to participate in military actions in the country, Armenia will again do that in line with the law.
Pashinyan reiterated that the Armenian experts are carrying out exclusively humanitarian mission in Syria.
As to the statement of the defense minister, the PM stressed the need to make it clear what was the question he was commenting on, as well as the context of the statement.
“However, we have no such plans,” he said.
As reported earlier, Armenia dispatched an 83-member team of doctors, sappers and security personnel to Syria to carry out humanitarian mine clearance activities, raise mine awareness among the population and offer medical aid in Aleppo exclusively outside the zone of military operations.
The Armenian government made the decision to provide humanitarian aid to Syria taking into consideration the war-triggered humanitarian crisis in the country and especially in Aleppo, the UN Security Council Resolutions 2393 (2017) and 2401 (2018), a written request from the Syrian side, as well as the existence of a large Armenian community in Aleppo.
