Defense minister: Should military actions resume, Armenia will attack
In the event of resumption of military actions, the Armenian army is not going to only defend, but will also attack, Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan said in an interview to the Public TV company of Armenia on Monday.
He confirmed reports the Armenian army is also acquiring attacking weapons. “The psychology is changing; the approach is changing as armies that defend themselves always lose. That is why we are not going to only defend ourselves. Should military actions resume, we will not hesitate,” the minister said.
Asked whether the army will attack too, Tonoyan said, “Why not?”
The minster said the Armenian Armed Forces are not going to enter an arms race with Azerbaijan. Instead, they will focus on quality.
“We are making purchases that will enable us to neutralize the possible ambitions of the adversary,” he said, adding he was also referring to the ongoing purchase of Su-30SM fighter jets from Russia.
As to whether the fighters cost a lot, Tonoyan stressed the life of an Armenian soldier is the most precious thing, adding, “We will find effective solutions to restrain and defeat the adversary.”
