Erdogan offered condolences over Mesrob Mutafyan’s passing
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered condolences for the passing of the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Mesrob Mutafyan, local sources reported. The president has phoned General Vicar of Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul Archbishop Aram Ateshyan.
To remind, the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan passed away on Friday at Holy Savior Armenian Hospital in Istanbul at the age of 63. He had been incapacitated since 2008 with an early onset of dementia.
Mesrob Mutafyan was elected Patriarch in 1998, replacing the late Karekin II. In 2008, Archbishop Aram Atesyan was appointed to fulfil Mesrob’s duties as the acting patriarch.
