Armenian MP ‘concerned’ by Minsk Group mediators’ recent statement
The recent statement of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs ahead of the upcoming Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting is rather concerning, the head of the Bright Armenia parliamentary faction, Edmon Marukyan told a briefing at the National Assembly on Monday.
Meantime, the lawmaker stresses this is neither the first nor the last statement which sparks concerns.
“I believe, the most disturbing part in the statement is that ‘future determination of the final legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh is possible through a legally binding expression of will.’ In fact, this contradicts the fundamental approach of the Armenian side according to which the Artsakh Republic citizens became self-determined on 10 December 1991 in a referendum which is legally binding,” the MP said.
“The Armenian side insisted that the referendum is already a fact, and the requests for a similar referendum means overlooking that referendum," he underlined.
Marukyan stressed the Armenian PM and foreign minister should continue to insist on Artsakh’s return to the negotiating table.
“I think it's clear to all that nobody in Armenia is preparing to surrender territories. Moreover, there is still no one in Azerbaijan who is ready to recognize Artsakh. Thus, it's important to negotiate, since any kind of negotiation is much better than shootings from both sides,” he added.
