Conflicts should be solved through exclusively peaceful means - President Sarkissian
The Armenian-Georgian relations are characterized with atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian stated today at a joint press statement with his Georgian counterpart. To note, President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili is conducting a two-day official visit to Armenia.
“Our joint history has been characterized with many civilizational commonalities and traditions of friendly states. The multifaceted cooperation between our two countries are grounded on that base,” Sarkissian said in his remarks.
The parties stressed that during the talks they addressed a wide range of issues pertaining to the bilateral cooperation between Georgia, Armenia, including joint projects in tourism, transport, IT and agriculture sectors.
President Sarkissian emphasized that Armenia has always been interested in establishing and maintaining regional peace and stability. Speaking of the regional conflicts, President Sarkissian said. “We concurred that conflicts are not identical and subsequently the basis for their settlement cannot be identical. To my personal view, however, solutions can be found only through peaceful means based on international law and norms with consideration of people’s right to self-determination what regards to Artsakh,” the president stressed.
Georgian President Zurabishvili, in turn, said that Georgia and Armenia are not only neighbors, but “friendly countries” as well. “We live in the region for which stability and peace are decisive… stability and peace are the necessary preconditions to develop our countries’ economies, and to further deepen our economic cooperation,” President Zurabishvili said in her remarks.
Zurabishvili then spoke of the challenges that the region is facing nowadays. She said, there is no alternative to “peaceful way” of resolving conflicts that “deter and slow down our headway and development.”
