UN Secretary-General welcomes the Vienna meeting between Pashinyan, Aliyev
The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) has welcomed the first meeting between the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, held in Vienna on 29 March 2019, under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the emphasis the leaders placed on creating an environment conducive to peace and on taking further steps towards successful negotiations,” the statement issued by the UN press office on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres reads.
Secretary-General Guterres has also welcomed their recommitment to strengthening the ceasefire and addressing humanitarian issues, as well as continuing dialogue to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. “The Secretary-General commends the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs for their important mediation role and reiterates the full support of the United Nations for their continued efforts,” the statement concluded.
To remind, summing up Pashinyan-Aliyev talks, the OSCE Minsk Co-Chairs said the meeting took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere and provided an opportunity for the two leaders to clarify their respective positions.
