Paylan calls for putting Armenian Genocide issue on Turkish parliament’s agenda
Turkish-Armenian MP Garo Paylan, representing the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) took to Twitter on Thursday to comment on Wednesday’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Italian parliament and the signing of a decree designating April 24 as a day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The lawmaker called for putting the Armenian Genocide issue on the Turkish parliament’s agenda.
“The Armenian Genocide issue should be pulled from the agenda of the Italian, French and U.S. parliaments and made a topic of discussion at the parliament of Turkey, the country where this big tragedy took place. Armenians in Turkey have been waiting for justice for 104 years already,” he said.
The Italian parliament’s Chamber of Deputies recognized and condemned the 1915 Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, while President Macron signed a decree on 10 April to declare April 24 as a national day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.
In addition, U.S. Congressmen Adam Schiff and Gus Bilirakis on Monday were joined by more than 70 of their U.S. House colleagues in introducing a new Armenian Genocide Resolution aimed at establishing, as a matter of U.S. policy, 1) the rejection of Armenian Genocide denial, 2) ongoing official U.S. government recognition and remembrance of this crime, and 3) the importance of education about the Armenian Genocide in preventing modern-day atrocities.
