Montreal declares April 24 as Armenian Genocide commemoration day
The Montreal City Council issued a statement regarding the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide at its special session on 15 April, stating the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916 under the Ottoman Empire was the first genocide of the 20th century, which killed two-thirds of the Armenian people.
Since 1997, the Montreal City Council annually adopts a resolution condemning the deportations and massacre of 1,5 million Armenians, Horizon Weekly reports.
The statement of the municipality says that Montreal is home to some 50,000 Armenians, who, as a community, greatly contribute to the city’s cultural, economic and political life.
The Montreal mayor has signed an order to declare April 24, 2019 as a day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in the city, the newspaper said.
