Yerevan food truck owners protest outside government building
A group of owners of food trucks in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, staged a protest outside the government building on Thursday, demanding the authorities to immediately handle the issues in the sector.
The protest comes after all the food trucks in the city were left without power supply as the inspections carried out by the Yerevan Municipality found violations of safety and environmental norms in the mobile cafes. The move has left over 100 people unemployed.
Aren Melikyan, the chairman of the Union of Food Trucks, told reporters that they ask the authorities to offer alternative options to mobile cafes.
He said all the 47 food trucks should be temporarily allowed to operate until a new law regulating the sector is adopted.
The chairman also said they have discussed the issue the Yerevan City Council members and submitted proposals on regulating the sector.
The Yerevan Municipality has launched legislative amendments to regulate the activities of food trucks in the city. After the amendments are passed, the Yerevan City Council will specify the respective standards, zoning, as well as the days and hours of their operation.
