President: All branches of government must reflect Armenian people’s collective will
President Armen Sarkissian of Armenia issued a statement following Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s call for rallies outside all courts across the country.
“The fact that the democratic processes in the Republic of Armenia are irreversible should not raise any doubts either in Armenia or outside its borders,” Sarkissian said.
“By the Constitution of Armenia, power belongs to the people. Therefore, the branches of government – legislative, executive and judicial – must reflect the collective will of the Armenian people and serve their constitutional goals.
“Therefore, I urge all the citizens of Armenia, regardless of their social and political position, to maintain peace, adhere to the Constitution and laws,” reads the statement.
Being abroad on a working visit, the president said he is keeping in touch with the relevant state agencies.
Demonstrators have blocked entrances to all courts in Armenia since Monday morning after the PM urged supporters to stage such protests for what he said will be the start of the ‘second phase of the Armenian revolution.’
