Two arrested in armed attack on ex-Artsakh army chief’s supporters
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the armed attack on supporters of Samvel Babayan, a former commander-in-chief of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Defense Army.
Armenia’s Investigative Committee told Panorama.am the two have been arrested ‘on suspicion of committing hooliganism through a weapon use and illegally possessing firearms.’
In a statement issued on Thursday, Babayan’s office said a ‘popular gang’ in Artsakh stopped a group of the retired general’s associates and supporters on Sevan-Martuni highway in Armenia and opened fire on them on Wednesday night. The statement claimed the ‘gang’ serves Artsakh’s former Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan.
Later in the day, Director of Armenia’s National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan told reporters that the case has been ‘fully solved’, adding the incident resulted from a financial dispute between two groups of individuals.
