“Sabre Dance" to be premiered at Shanghai Film Festival
The film "Sabre Dance" directed by Yusup Razykov which presents the history of creation of Aram Khachaturian’s masterpiece - the famous "Sabre Dance"- will be premiered at the at Shanghai Film Festival on June 15-24.
The film, staring Hambardzum Kabanyan in the main role, was shot in Yaroslavl region, Russia and in Yerevan, where the main production site was the Yerevan State Opera and Ballet Theater.
“I have had interest in Aram Khachaturian’s works since childhood. His works are full of unbelievable strenghth and power. “Sabre Dance" is one of the most recognizable works worldwide which attracted the world in the 20th century not only its popularity but also the meaning. We are now happy that the Chinese audience will have the chance to enjoy it and go into the world of ballet and music,” Razykov has noted.
To note, "Sabre Dance" a movement in the final act of Aram Khachaturian's ballet Gayane (1942), where the dancers display their skill with sabres is considered one of the signature pieces of 20th century popular music.
In 1948, the "Sabre Dance" became a jukebox hit in the United States. Due to its popularity, Newsweek suggested that 1948 could be called "Khachaturian Year in the United States." In 1948, three versions of the "Sabre Dance" reached number one in the Billboard Best-Selling Records by Classical Artists.
