Armenian justice minister comments on extradition of Serzh Sargsyan’s nephew
The extradition of Narek Sargsyan, a nephew of former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan who is facing various criminal charges, is being carried out within the framework of an international treaty, Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan told reporters on Tuesday.
His comments came in response to a question about possible reasons behind his delayed extradition ordered by a Czech court.
“I believe the procedures that took place were unlikely to be carried out earlier than that time. I don’t know whether it [the court ruling] will be appealed or not or how long it will take, since the person has judicial rights,” Zeynalyan said.
Narek Sargsyan was detained in Prague in December last year after the latter introduced himself by the name of Franklin Gonzales in a fake Guatemalan passport.
Armenia’s National Security Service issued an arrest warrant for the ex-president’s nephew on 6 July, with an international arrest warrant issued for him on 24 July.
He is charged with drug trafficking and weapon possession.
