Mayor of Armenia’s Abovyan town regains office
Incumbent Mayor of Armenia’s Abovyan town Vahagn Gevorgyan was re-elected to office in Sunday’s municipal elections, according to the preliminary results unveiled by the Central Electoral Commission.
The nonpartisan candidate, who was supported by the Prosperous Armenia Party, garnered 8,453 votes. Meanwhile, his main challenger Grigor Gulyan from the ruling Civil Contract party secured 8,058 votes, around 400 votes less than Gevorgyan.
The other mayoral candidates – Sasun Grigoryan, Manuk Mkrtchyan and Artur Ghazaryan – received 731, 435 and 139 votes, respectively.
A total of 18,176 residents out of 44,520 eligible voters turned out to the polls on Sunday. 360 ballot papers were declared invalid.
Earlier in October 2018, Civil Contract candidate Narek Babayan lost a race for mayor of Armenia’s Kapan town.
