Armenian parliament fails to elect new Supreme Judicial Council member
The Armenian National Assembly failed to elect Anna Margaryan as a new member of the Supreme Judicial Council during an extraordinary session on Monday.
Margaryan’s candidacy was backed by 66 lawmakers and opposed by 19 others.
Addressing lawmakers ahead of the vote, Margaryan attached importance to eradicating corruption and ensuring the efficiency of the judiciary as two key tools to increase the public trust in the system.
Also, she stressed the need to refrain from using the term ‘vetting’, claiming it not always has a positive potential. “Our only task is to ensure a decency in the judicial system, to ensure a fair and impartial judge who respects human rights and resorts to his own convictions and the law,” she said.
