U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at British Prime Minister Theresa May for her handling of Brexit, as well as the country’s ambassador to the US, who called the Trump administration “inept” and “dysfunctional", New York Post reports.

“I have been very critical about the way the U.K. and Prime Minister Theresa May handled Brexit. What a mess she and her representatives have created. I told her how it should be done, but she decided to go another way,” Trump tweeted on Monday.

​The president also lashed out at British ambassador to the US Sir Kim Darroch ​after confidential memos to his bosses in London revealed he wasn’t impressed by the Trump White House.

“I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well​ ​thought of within the U.S. We will no longer deal with him​,” Trump said before turning his attention once more to May.

“​​​The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new Prime Minister. While I thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent State Visit last month, it was the Queen who I was most impressed with!​” the president concluded.

​May officially stepped down last month after she failed to arrange Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Trump’s tweet about the prime minister represents an about-face from remarks he made last month during a state visit to England.

At a news conference with May in London, Trump said if he had been involved in Brexit, “I would have sued, but that’s OK,” adding that “she’s probably a better negotiator than I am.”

He then said she “teed up” the deal for her successor.

“Perhaps you won’t be given the credit that you deserve if they do something, but I think you deserve a lot of credit,” he said.

​A spokesman for May said Monday that it would apologize to the White House for Darroch’s comments, and Trade Minister Liam Fox will meet personally with Ivanka Trump to express regrets.

The Conservative Party will vote on July 22 to select the next prime minister.
