Armenian farmers protest water shortages
Farmers of Qaghtsrashen village in Ararat province have been holding a protest action outside the government building since early morning. They say poor irrigation infrastructure have created an acute water shortage that threatens to destroy their orchards and other crops. The village residents have been chanting “Make a step, give water” and demanded PM to receive them and discuss the matter.
One of the protesters argued the lands around the farms have the necessary amount of water that even pours into river Araks but they still experience water shortage because of dilapidated irrigation canals and tanks that have become filled with silt and been rendered useless.
In their words, the farms are provided with only 70 liters of water per second, while the needed water volumes amount for 170 liters per second.
The protesters were suggested to a form a working group of ten people and discuss the matter with representatives of State Water Committee.
