Armenia’s defense minister says border tension under control
Armenia’s Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan states the recent tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border should not cause concerns.
“In some border sections there is tension which is under control, but there is no need to worry”, the minister told reporters.
He said the tension is connected with the ongoing engineering works carried out by both sides.
Commenting on the recent fire opened by the Azerbaijani military in the direction of Armenia’s Yelpin village from Nakhichevan, the defense chief said the shooting was not targeted.
“In any case we have taken measures, with communication established with our neighbor, the Republic of Nakhichevan, to prevent such cases from repeating themselves,” Tonoyan said.
Asked whether he refers to the operational communication mentioned by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and whether or not it is productive, the minister said: “Yes. When an incident occurs, we check it and issue a warning, the other side takes actions,” he said, adding the communication is mediated and the process is ‘highly positive’.
