13 charged over violent unrest in Armenian town
13 people have been charged in connection with the violent unrest in the northern Armenian town of Ijevan.
As reported earlier, on 17 July a group of local residents blocked a major highway leading to the main Armenian-Georgian border crossing to protest against the government’s efforts to stop illegal logging in nearby forests.
The group ‘grossly’ violated the public order, showed disrespect towards the Ijevan residents, used violent acts against police officers by throwing stones and sticks at them and defied police orders, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
A criminal case has been launched into the incident.
10 of the charged persons have been placed under arrest, two of them have been released on bail, while another person has been set free on signature bond.
The preliminary probe is underway.
