NGO: Judge being prosecuted in Armenia after making an ‘unpleasant’ decision
The investigative agencies of Armenia not only violated judge Davit Grigoryan’s rights but also ignored the Supreme Judicial Council as a state body, co-founder of Legal Way NGO Siranush Sahakyan told a news conference on Friday, commenting on the criminal prosecution against the judge.
A Yerevan first instance court judge presiding over the trial of Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan, Grigoryan ruled to suspended the ex-president’s trial on 18 May, citing a “suspicion of discrepancy” between the Armenian Constitution and the charges brought against him two days after ordering his release from custody and forwarded the case to the Constitutional Court for a review. The decision was later overturned by the Court of Appeals.
The Special Investigative Service has searched the judge’s office and confiscated some materials. The office has been sealed.
Siranush Sahakyan noted the judged was assigned to the case involuntarily and had to examine it.
She stressed Davit Grigoryan is facing prosecution after making a decision which didn’t please the government, adding the prosecution is being carried out in gross violations of the law.
