Car race in support of Amulsar heading to Yerevan from Jermuk
A car race in support of Amulsar kicked off from Jermuk to Yerevan on Monday. The organizers are Jermuk residents and environmentalists, who protest against the possible operation of the gold mine, claiming the project would cause a serious danger to the environment.
In a statement ahead of the car race, the organizers said: “The government is expected to address the matter in a meeting with the head of Jermuk community and community members, school teachers and principals, owners of resort centres and hotels as well as five persons protesting against the operation of the mine. Thus, Jermuk residents consider it expedient to go to the meeting in 50 cars instead of five persons.”
It is noted that he meeting will take place at Baghramyan 26 chaired by PM Nikol Pashinyan at 12 pm Yerevan time.
To note, the series of protests came after Armenia’s Investigative Committee on Wednesday published the results of an audit conducted by Earth Link & Advanced Resources Development on the Amulsar gold mine project, concluding that the exploitation of the gold mine does not cause any significant danger to the environment and there are no grounds for criminal proceedings against the company.
