Pashinyan: Today marks declaration of Artsakh’s independence from Soviet Azerbaijan
Today is the day of the declaration of Artsakh’s independence from Soviet Azerbaijan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a Facebook post on Monday.
“Glory to the heroic people of Artsakh! Glory to the united and victorious Armenian people!” he added.
Armenians worldwide are celebrating the 28th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh Republic) on 2 September.
On this day in 1991 a joint session of the Nagorno Karabakh regional council and the council of people’s deputies of Shahumyan Region was held in Stepanakert, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted. On 10 December of the same year a referendum was held to confirm Artsakh’s independence. On that day, 99% of the country’s population voted for independence.
