Armenia marks Rescuer’s Day
Armenia is celebating Rescuer’s Day on Wednesday, 4 September. The day was designated at the Armenian cabinet meeting on September 4, 2008.
Armenian rescuers have a hard experience in liquidation of consequences of emergency situations. In 1988, along with thousands of volunteers from the Soviet Union, they rescued many people in the earthquake-hit areas of Armenia. One of the main lessons of the Spitak earthquake was the formation of rescue services in Armenia and other former Soviet republics.
However, media say, long before the formation of the rescue service, Armenia had many brave “rescuers” who continue to be the country’s pride.
On their holiday, distinguished rescuers at the Ministry of Emergency Situations receive awards and souvenirs during official ceremonies marking the day.
