Salaries of teachers set to increase in Armenia from September
Salaries of school teachers in Armenia are set to increase by 10% starting from September, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan announced at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
The ministry proposes to allocate 1,665,675,000 drams from the tax revenues of Armenia’s state budget for 2019 to this end.
The measure will apply to a total of 38,000 teachers.
The increase is part of the government decision to amend the law on the 2019 state budget that would raise revenues and expenditures by 1,665,675,000 drams.
The minister also dismissed as fake some reports alleging the increase of salaries is made at the expense of mass layoffs at schools. He stressed job cuts at schools were mainly conditioned by the age limit for teachers as it was the case before. Those dismissed mainly included teachers aged aver 65, he said.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted for his part the layoffs aim to ensure teacher quality.
Harutyunyan also said that they are working on setting the minimum wages for full-time teachers at 108,000 drams per month.
