‘Tension zone weakening’: Seismologist urges people not to panic after Tuesday’s quake in Armenia
Aftershocks continue to the present after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit near an Armenian village on Tuesday evening, interim Director of the Seismic Protection Service SNCO at the Ministry of Emergency Situations, seismologist Sos Margaryan told Panorama.am.
According to authorities, the organization continues to carry out seismic monitoring and around-the-clock duty.
“We have already detected more than 100 aftershocks, which continued all night long. The tension zone is weakening, so aftershocks are normal,” he said.
Margaryan noted similar quakes are characteristic to the Javakheti Fault Zone.
“There is nothing extraordinary here, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake is not considered strong. At 5am I was reported on aftershocks, naturally that activity continues. There is little chance that we could have another earthquake,” he said, urging people not to panic.
“The seismic regime is under control,” he added, promising to update the public on the matter.
The earthquake struck 13km northeast of the village of Bavra near Armenia-Georgia border at a depth of 10km.
The tremor measured magnitude 6-7 points at the epicenter.
The jolts were felt in Shirak, Lori, Tavush, Aragatsotn and Armavir Provinces and capital Yerevan.
According to preliminary information the tremors did not cause causalities or destruction in the country.
