Opposition MPs comment on Armenian security chief’s resignation
Prosperous Armenia opposition parliamentary faction MP Arman Abovyan states it is difficult to assess the resignation of National Security Service (NSS) Director Artur Vanetsyan amid the lack of comprehensive information about the situation.
“Certain processes are taking place within the government. It’s necessary that the statements made over the past two days be duly explained for us to make any assessments,” he said.
“At the moment we don’t fully obtain the information about what has happened. There are different hints and subtexts, but making political judgments based on them is not the best way,” said another Prosperous Armenia lawmaker Oveta Tonoyan.
She also decried as ‘strange’ the criticism targeting Vanetsyan since Monday.
Commenting on the NSS chief’s activity of one year and a half, the MP said it is very difficult to evaluate the efficiency of the structure. “However, our assessment is not negative,” she said.
Vanetsyan stepped down as National Security Service Director on Monday.
In a statement announcing his resignation, he described his decision as 'the most preferable and justified' option under the current circumstances.
